What is a Podcast?

Podcasts are audio programs available on the internet … like radio shows for the World Wide Web! They are usually updated on a regular basis – whether daily, weekly or monthly – and can be on any topic you can imagine. You can listen to a podcast on your computer by simply going to the podcast's web page.

If you're an on-the-go user, you can also download the podcast and listen to it on an iPod or other digital music player. In fact, the word podcast comes from a combination of “iPod” and “broadcasting.” Most iPod users subscribe to their favorite podcasts using iTunes. Subscribing allows your software to automatically update the podcast each time a new episode is posted online, without you having to go hunting for it.

If you don't have iTunes or an iPod, you can still subscribe to your favorite podcasts -- many podcasts can be added to start pages like Google, My Yahoo!, myAOL or Newsgator (this is accomplished through something called an RSS feed). Other podcast sites let you sign up for free email alerts that will notify you when a new podcast is up and running, so you can go to the site and listen to it at your convenience.
