The best-bet kid flicks for each (adult) member of the zodiac
With mind-boggling visuals, witty dialogue and characters voiced by A-list Hollywood actors, cartoons aren't just child's play anymore! While filmmakers increasingly turn to the animated medium to tell very adult stories (like graphic artist Marjane Satrapi's autobiographical Persepolis, which chronicles her upbringing in revolutionary Iran), today's kids' films are starting to attract grown-up audiences, too. So allow yourself to be entertained by lighter fare, and turn to the zodiac to figure out which animated feature will appeal to you the most.
Aries (March 21 - April 19) The Incredibles
If anyone understands what it's like to be a superhero trapped in a humdrum routine, it's you, Aries! Under the sign of the Warrior, you crave action and adventure, even if you're stuck behind a desk. So Pixar's 2004 CGI fantasy about a cadre of superheroes who are legally obligated to retire into the rat race of 9-to-5 jobs and -- gasp! -- family life, will strike a chord. Years after a number of lawsuits force larger-than-life crime-fighters Mr. Incredible and his wife Elastigirl to settle down, they are called back into action to defeat an evil genius. As they fall back into rank (this time, with their kids at their side), the film's true message will resonate with you: you can't stifle greatness!
Taurus (April 20 - May 20) Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs
You might remember the popular children's book about the town of Chewandswallow, where weather is food-based and residents come to expect their meals to be showered on them three times a day. As the Bull sign that loves comfy earthly pleasures like good eats in abundance, you might find that this scenario appeals to you already! But as Sony Pictures Animation translates the story into a computerized caper, the plot grows thicker: scientist Flint Lockwood shows a Taurean determination to end hunger worldwide -- and eventually succeeds by finding a way to convert watery precipitation into groceries! Understandably, this creates just as many problems as it solves, but you'll enjoy the delicious premise of tasty problem-solving (an activity at which the logical Bull sign excels!).
Gemini (May 21 - June 20) Monsters vs. Aliens
DreamWorks' 2009 sci-fi fantasy flick will appeal to your charismatic social side and your multi-faceted personality. Reese Witherspoon voices the character of Susan Murphy, a bride-to-be who morphs into a giant when she's struck by a meteor on her wedding day. Shuttled off by the military, Susan is hidden away with a ragtag population of other mutated beings (including a cockroach-headed doctor, a fish-ape and a talking blob of gelatin) -- mutants who, like her, find their lives divided neatly into "before" and "after," which should appeal to your sign's "twin" sensibility! Susan demonstrates her Air sign social skills and convinces her new friends to re-enter the outside world ... only to realize that her high-profile lifestyle has made her a target for aliens attracted to her radioactive energy. Being a Gemini, surely you know what it's like to have that kind of magnetism!
Cancer (June 21 - July 22) Madagascar
The sign of the Crab prizes a solid home base above all else, so DreamWorks' 2005 feature about exotic animals living in New York's Central Park Zoo will tug at your heartstrings: Marty the zebra, Alex the lion, Gloria the hippo and Melman the giraffe are forced to reconsider the concept of "home" when Marty leads them on a crazed caper to see more of the world -- and lands them on the African island of Madagascar. You'll especially relate to Melman's fussy discomfort at being forced into the unknown, even as the characters are surrounded by your element -- Water. But for as far as they are from the world they're used to, this wise-cracking crew of critters taps into another Cancerian trait: emotional support. Zebra, lion, hippo and giraffe all forge a makeshift family as they encounter strange and new species, and try to plot their way home ... wherever home might be!
Leo (July 23 - August 22) Shrek
As the sign of the regal Lion, Leo, you are fascinated by the idea of nobility -- even when it comes from the most unexpected places. Your sign is very heroic, so the story of ill-mannered ogre Shrek taps into your fascination with greatness -- whether the hero is born great or, in this case, has greatness thrust upon him! With his homeland threatened and a maiden in distress dumped on him, Shrek embarks on a journey that will ultimately make him royalty -- how Leo of him! Shrek would just as soon run from the spotlight (contrary to the Leo nature), but you'll enjoy the way that DreamWorks studios pokes fun at competitor studio Disney by forcing fairy tale archetypes (Pinocchio and Snow White, to name a couple) front and center, and making the villain's kingdom a virtual Disneyland. Shrek might prefer to stay subtle and fly under the radar, but the Shrek film franchise keeps the laughs coming with a fiery Leo-style intensity.
Virgo (August 23 - September 22) Astro Boy
Being the most practical sign of the zodiac, your dependence on cold, hard logic often earns you the bad rap of being robot-like. That's why you'll enjoy this star-studded CGI take on Japan's popular Astro Boy cartoon series. Imagi Animation Studios brings to life the story of Pinocchio-like Astro Boy who, instead of being made of wood, is crafted out of electronics to resemble the dead son of a brilliant but distraught scientist. When young Astro Boy realizes he has fallen short of his "father's" hopes, and that he cannot replace a human boy, he accepts his robotic calling and makes it his identity, much like your sign often defines itself by its job or career! But Astro Boy is no soulless android, and you'll get where he's coming from as he literally works to win his father's approval through personal achievement.
