The Halloween and Scorpio ConnectionDeath, transformation and regeneration
The sacred Celtic New Year, Samhain, runs from sunset on October 31 to sunset on November 1, marking the end of the harvest and summer, and the moving into the colder, darker months. There are many stories associated with the eve of this festival, but all are based in the deceased and the afterlife. The veil between the living and the dead is the thinnest at this time, allowing crossover of spirits to return to roam the countryside for the night. Historically, people have decorated their homes, worn outlandish costumes and paraded through the streets being loud and boisterous to ward off any bad spirits. It was also thought that the fairy kingdom had dominion on Samhain eve, and that fairies roamed the streets as beggars, seeking food from all they encountered. Everyone providing assistance received good luck for the coming year, while those who rebuked the fairies receive bad luck. This was considered the original trick or treat. All believers made sure to treat any beggar to ensure a year of good luck. In 835 AD, to stop the practice of Samhain, the Church moved All Saints Day from May 13 to November 1, by order of Pope Gregory IV. Also called All Hallows Day or Hallowmas, this celebration was to circumvent that of the Pagan Celts, but due to deep ingraining, it morphed into what we now call Halloween.
