Mercury is described as going retrograde when it appears to be moving backward through the heavens. Of course, the planet really isn't backtracking; it just looks as though it is. Nevertheless, this optical illusion wreaks havoc with everything that Mercury governs, including communication, short-distance travel, agreements and electrical equipment. With all this retrograde-inspired confusion in the air, it isn't the best idea engage in certain romance related activities. There are, however, some amorous activities that are favored during this fleeting three-week period. Check out the following list to discover how to make Mercury retrograde work for you.

Don't -- Get married! A marriage vow is one of the most important promises you'll ever make. Do you really want to tempt fate by making this promise at a time when promises are easily broken? Even if you have absolute faith in your love, Mercury retrograde can wreak havoc with the wedding ceremony itself. The justice of the peace may not show up, the caterer's oven could break down, or the reception hall might reserve the wrong date. Why subject yourself to the potential hassles?

Do -- Renew your vows! If you're already married, there's no better time to reassert your devotion. Take this opportunity to throw a reception that you can really enjoy; you'll be far more relaxed the second time around. You'll feel less frenzied, so you can chat with friends, savor refreshments and dance the night away!

Don't -- Pursue a crush! You could be bitterly disappointed once Mercury goes direct again. Someone who seems totally fab will be utterly drab in a few short weeks. Whether you're looking through rose-colored glasses or beer goggles, the effect of Mercury retrograde is the same ... skewed vision. 

Do -- Bury the hatchet! If you deeply regret breaking up or having a falling out with somebody, now is the time to make amends. You don't necessarily have to reconcile, but Mercury retrograde will allow you to release deep resentments. If you do reconcile, work to change the behavior that caused the initial breakup. Mercury retrograde affords a wonderful opportunity to correct past mistakes.

Don't -- Initiate divorce proceedings! If you're truly determined to break things off with your spouse, wait until Mercury goes direct to file papers. Otherwise, your divorce could drag out, taking a heavy toll on your bank account and emotions. Besides, the terms of your breakup should be crystal clear. That won't happen if you start divorce proceedings during Mercury retrograde.
