Using the zodiac to strengthen your relationship with your daughter

The power to shape and mold a young woman rests largely in the hands of her own mother. Unfortunately, when you're caught up in life, it's hard to get perspective on how to raise your girl. Much has been written about the challenges of mother-daughter relationships, but little from an astrological viewpoint. A better understanding of Mom's own Sun sign can help mothers be more aware of how they are building relationships with their daughters.

Aries (March 21 - April 19)
You want your daughter to be fiercely independent, to such an extent that you may have trouble acknowledging you and your daughter's need to support each other. It's good to teach independence, but it's also good to learn interdependence and sensitivity to each other's feelings.

Taurus (April 20 - May 20)
You teach your daughter practical perseverance -- that strong and steady wins the race. You may be pretty traditional in your values and expectations of how a young woman should appear and behave. It would be best to give way a bit, and recognize that your generation's style of dress and values are not the ultimate standards for all.

Gemini (May 21 - June 20)
As a seeker of change and activity, you're more likely to want to hang out with your daughter than be a mother. This can foster ease of communication between you two, but when times get tough for your daughter, you'll have to remember that you're more than just an older sister -- you're her parent.

Cancer (June 21 - July 22)
You may find that you're not only a mother to your daughter, but to all of her friends as well. You're almost like an uber-mother. However, be careful not to look at your daughter as a miniature version of you. She's just as entitled to her life as you are to yours. Her feelings and moods don't have to mirror yours.

Leo (July 23 - August 22)
Your daughter will learn to appreciate her own sense of authority and entitlement from you. You know how to take center stage and claim it as your own. The confusion starts when you attempt to make your daughter a captive audience. Let her run the show every now and then.

Virgo (August 23 - September 22)
You may take great comfort in worrying and fussing over details, but it may not always translate well with your daughter. Not everything can be explained rationally or by a set of rules. Take time to listen to your daughter's feelings without judgment, and remember the times when the world didn't make sense to you, either.
