What to wear when you're the guest
by Saundra Sorenson
Most of us have designated wedding dresses ... that we wear to other people's weddings. But beyond the "no black before 6 p.m." rule (and the level for formality indicated on the invite), how do we decide on the perfect duds for a season of nuptials? The zodiac is a great place to start.
Aries (March 21 - April 19)
Ruled by the red planet, you, fiery fashion plate, will probably find yourself drawn to low-cut blush numbers. While stealing the spotlight is effortless for you, remember that this is someone else's big day, so err on the side of demure. A perfect fit for you might be a strapless red dress, knee-length, with a shawl to suggest modesty. As for footwear, go for flats -- your sign is always ready-for-action, and you need to be able to leap up to propose a toast, request a song or get people dancing. Still, it's in your nature to want to be sexy, so lace up those 4-inch heels, but pack a pair of flip flops, just in case.
Taurus (April 20 - May 20)
As a Bull with the taste for the finer things, you, Taurus, prefer being comfy over cutting-edge. Whatever you wear needs to move with you and feel good against your skin. Luckily they're doing wonderful things with jersey knits these days, and it isn't hard to find frocks that drape, cowl or flow in styles that suggest their silkier counterparts, but feel just as natural as your favorite t-shirt. If you opt for black, you can fake that you're wearing a finer fabric to a more formal evening affair. Otherwise, as a Venus-ruled sign, you'll probably find yourself more drawn to pastels and pinks.
Gemini (May 21 - June 20)
Whatever you wear, make sure it allows for move-bustin' and healthy amounts of grooving, because as a lively Gemini, the dance floor will be where you live once the ceremony is over. Under the sign of the Twins, you'll find that your tastes are a bit androgynous, so you'll stay away from frills and fuss and probably opt for a free-flowing dress that's simple in design. Think "flapper"--grab one of those strappy, formless shifts that are making the rounds these days--paired with flats to ensure maximum mobility, because if you're not dancing, you're probably flittering from table to table, making new friends.
Cancer (June 21 - July 22)
As the sign that rules history and memory, you'll feel right at home in a vintage number that's feminine through and through. Look for an appropriate gown that summons another era, with a touch of modern sensibility. Make sure there's a place to stash tissues, because you, Cancer, will be shedding a few tears during the ceremony. And make sure the dress isn't too restrictive -- you'll be plenty busy playing mother to the bride and helping her with any last-minute details that need to be ironed out.
Leo (July 23 - August 22)
Under the sign of the Lion, you are proud and daring. Your fashion sense is edgy, so you'll need to be reminded to tone it down a bit. You might be the one sign of the zodiac that could possibly pull of gold lamé, but save it for the afterparty (and remember, sequins are considered a faux pas during a day wedding). Go flashy but tasteful: if you opt for a bold print, make sure the cut is conservative. Be aware of whether an animal print is appropriate for this specific wedding, and if not, go demure but express yourself the best you know how: with a little bling.
Virgo (August 23 - September 22)
Practical Virgo, you're best-equipped to figure out which heel height is appropriate for the occasion. You keep things comfortable, and prefer to go simple and elegant over trendy and flashy. Opt for an understated dress in earth tones -- think bateau neckline or turtleneck, combining graceful with modest. You'll most likely be there to lend a helping hand with wedding logistics, so whatever you choose to wear should allow for maximum activity as you try to corral the right people into one place, or as you take the clipboard from the bride so she can enjoy her special day.
