Help your students go to the head of the class with these Feng Shui tips
By Stephanie Dempsey
Good teachers are always looking for creative ways to engage their students. Feng Shui offers subtle but powerful solutions to stubborn problems that plague every classroom. By introducing just a few of these cures into your room, you may notice a dramatic improvement in your students' performance. If not, your room may be like school in the summertime: no class!
Take Command
As the teacher, you need to have command of your classroom. Therefore, it's imperative that you position your desk so that it has a commanding view of the door. Ideally, your station should be located diagonally opposite the main entrance of the classroom, so that you will have a clear view of who enters and exits. Avoid putting your desk in line with the door, as this position will drain your energy, thereby undermining your authority. If you can't put your desk where you can see the door, position a mirror so that it reflects the entrance while you are seated.
Set the Tone
The tone of your class is set within five seconds of entering the door. Therefore, you need to pay special attention to this area. Hang a wind chime from the inside knob so that everyone will hear a pleasant sound each time they enter the room. Dabbing three drops of essential oil across the top of the door each month will make your kids feel refreshed, engaged and eager to learn. Use a stimulating scent like peppermint, pine or cedar. Last but not least, position a picture with a sense of depth directly across from the door, so that it will effortlessly draw your students into the classroom.
All Eyes Up Front
When you need your students to focus on something important, put something that represents the metal element in their direct field of vision. Metal energy can be represented by the color white, round shapes and objects that refract the light. Standing in front of a white movie screen can command the kids' attention. So can positioning yourself next to a big globe or suspending a faceted crystal from the ceiling. Position the crystal so that it hangs right above the area where you give lessons.
Plant Seeds of Wisdom
Healthy plant life will encourage your students to learn and grow. Keep a large, blooming plant in the far left corner of your classroom, and assign a different student to water it at regular intervals.
Promote Togetherness
Schools can fall victim to bullying. Promote harmony and friendship in your class by creating a connection area in your classroom. This area should sit on the right side of the class. Decorate this space with rainbow colors, comfortable seating and an area rug that is large enough for everybody to sit upon. Meet here regularly to read or plan group activities. This is also a great place to display a happy group photo of you and your students.
