St. Patty's Movie Marathon

St. Patrick's Party Guide: Tip 2 of 4
St. Patty's Movie Marathon

by Tarot.com

Movies take us to other places, and the movies below are all about the Emerald Isles or folks who hail from there. So gather some friends, some green food and beverages and celebrate in front of the screen.

Make your movie party meaningful and fun using Tarot. One idea is to have everyone draw a Tarot card from the deck. Then go around the room, discussing the card's meaning and imagery. Then any time something from or relating to their card (the number 9, the Sun, a coin or money and so on) happens, they shout out and get a point. The person with the most points wins the Tarot deck to take home!

Luck of the Irish: A NYC socialite, an Irish lass and a Leprechaun in the Big Apple. 'Nuff said! This 1948 classic is a charmer, and appeals to the young at heart.

Darby O'Gill and the Little People: This Disney film is one for the kiddies, or the lasses who want to watch a young Sean Connery in action. According to the poster, it's got "More than a Wee Bit of Magical Shenanigans!"

Waking Ned Devine: Leave it to the Irish to pull off a movie being both funny and warm-hearted, instead of cynical and dark. Full of likeable old folks and quirky characters, this PG movie has some adult humor.

St. Patty's Party Guide

Throw a St. Patty's party like no other! Use our tools to help create a party that people will remember, and beg you to throw, year after year!

The Commitments: This one isn't for the kiddies! But it's got great music, lots of drinking, smoking and swearing -- plus a good fight or two. The gritty but poignant side of Dublin working-class folks merges with some amazing soul music performances.

Far and Away: A late-1800s romance about Irish immigrants to America, starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. Enjoy it for the cheesiness, because you're soft-hearted or simply to crack jokes about Scientology.

Good Will Hunting: All right, so this one is only very loosely Irish-themed. But it's got working-class Boston, it's got Ben Affleck and Matt Damon before they were big news and it makes you want to get off the couch and do important stuff!

Patriot Games: For the testosterone-driven crowds, this Tom Clancy thriller features a over-his-head Harrison Ford facing off against the excellent Sean Bean (that's Boromir, for you Lord of the Rings fans!) as an IRA assassin.

U2: Rattle and Hum: The interviewer's terrible questions and U2's disinterested answers will live forever in the memories of those who have this album, but they were captured on film, as well! The performances are awesome, but the true gem here is watching the members of the band humbly peek into the world of American soul, rock and blues. They're like pilgrims attending a collection of holy sites, only in this case, the holy relics are Elvis's motorcycle and B.B. King's guitar.

Leprechaun: Jennifer Anniston before Friends? Warwick Davis, who played both Willow and Wicket, as a monster? This is a monumental film, folks … and if you're looking for stereotypes for your movie game, this one has it all. If just one film isn't enough, you have up to FIVE sequels to choose from, including Leprechaun 4: in Space and Leprechaun 5: Leprechaun in the Hood.

The Secret of Roan Inish: This poetic, mystical, slow film isn't for the party crowd … it's for when you're spending the night in with your sweetie, assuming that you both take your Irish folklore seriously (or you don't mind distracting one another from the film!).

For Some Added Fun: Looking for a game to keep the gang entertained while you're watching the flick? Take a swig of some green beverage every time someone in the movie says something stereotypically Irish ("Top o' the morning to ya!"), every time a character shows up wearing green, and so on.
