Creativity Meets Common Sense

Illinois Governor Rod Blagojavich is now the leading candidate for the Stupidest Politician of 2008 award. In a year that offered stellar performances by John Edwards, Sarah Palin and Duke Cunningham (among others), Blagojavich may be in a class of his own. The soon-to-be-ex-governor was born on December 10, 1956 with his Sun in Sagittarius and Moon in Pisces, both ruled by expansive Jupiter.

Perhaps Blago just overreached or maybe he was joking? Saggies are known for their great senses of humor and occasional tendency to exaggerate. That’s unlikely, of course, especially since his aggressive Mars is in sharp-as-a-knife Aries in a close 90-degree square with Mercury in ambitious Capricorn. This pair can show ruthlessness that has been uncovered during Pluto’s transit. The underworld planet exposed the Governor’s Senator-for-sale program upon its entry to Capricorn in what, we can only hope, will be a continuing trend of cleaning up corruption in high places.

The explosive opposition of strict Saturn and revolutionary Uranus that was exact on November 4 — and which will be with us until July 2010 — landed hard on Blagojevich’s chart. Uranus is making a precise square to his Sagittarius Sun, signaling surprise and sudden upset. Confining Saturn’s square to his Sun spells prison bars. And Pluto, just before it left Sagittarius, made a square to the Guv’s Jupiter during the investigation that led to his arrest.

But remember: you cannot measure the level of the soul in a birth chart. There are those born the same day as Blagojevich who are experiencing these harsh transits in very different ways. The message to all of us, though, is that change is inevitable. Not the vague kind of change that is a regular part of life on planet Earth, but the wrenching, shocking, world-shifting changes that have been shaking the economy, the streets of Mumbai and America’s political landscape. We don’t all have planets directly in the path of this Saturn-Uranus juggernaut, yet it seems clear that there’s no going back to the way things were. The only way out of this mess is to move forward.
