In response to your comments

November 20th, 2007 by Hans Decoz

In this Numerology blog, I will respond to comments and answer questions and try to remove some of the confusing contradictions and disagreements that plague modern Numerology. In response to some of your comments:

Val mentions that she uses different short versions of her name in different circumstances and that this seems to change the affect it has on others. Here is the basic rule: the name you use to introduce yourself (which is often a “short” version of your full legal name), whether on a business card or in person, reveals to some extent “the way you feel about yourself.” Or in other words “who YOU think you are.” Generally, especially in a professional setting, you want to use your full first name (rule of thumb though, there are exceptions), because that offers the most complete vision of you as seen through YOUR eyes. By the way Val, it is best to stick to one version of your name, don’t use different names in different situations; it confuses you even if you don’t realize it. And don’t bother with the number 21 as a good number for career. It is good only in creative, people oriented jobs (actors, newscasters, etc.) and even then the influence is minor.

Nagy from Hungary, also had a question regarding his name. As a European (I was born in Amsterdam so my first language is Dutch) I am familiar with the issue that certain Roman and Germanic and Slavic languages have different alphabets. In fact, I devoted quite a long time to adding a conversion system to my Numerology software that allows for the use of these different alphabets by “translating” the non-English letters and letter combinations to English letters without losing the integrity of the Numerology reports (as far as I know only Decoz Numerology Software contains that feature). In Nagy’s case, when using that feature your report should be as accurate as when your name was Smith or Jones.

Denise, you get different numbers from different sites. I can only answer your question as to which one is correct if you send me your complete date of birth. But here is the correct formula for your “daily” number. Add your month of birth to your day of birth to the current calendar year plus the current calendar month plus the current calendar day. I was born May 15, so here is the calculation for my daily number for November 19, 2007: 5(May) + 15 + 2007 + 11(November) + 19 = 2057. Reduce this to a single digit by adding all four digits together: 2 + 0 + 5 + 7 = 14, which in turn reduces to (1 + 4 =) 5. Et voila! Simple non?

Verity wonders how she can change her name and find a name that is in harmony with all three areas. This is a common enough question but a very difficult one to answer. In the 30+ years that I have been involved professionally with Numerology, I have yet to find a name that is perfectly in harmony with all (or even a few) areas of the chart. My advise is to select one or more names with which you have some connection through family or otherwise. For example, your grandmother’s name, or a favorite author or character. A name you love or you admire a person with that name. Then either pick one based on your own intuition and sense of “fitting” (can I get any more vague?) or consult a numerologist, but stick with the names you choose and don’t let a numerologist make one up. It never works and often results in disharmony. There are simply too many variables. Imagine if meteorologists could actually “create” the weather; chaos would be everywhere and the planet ruined in a month. A numerologist “creating” a name for someone would produce a similar result.

In response to Rlariel’s question: I have no idea if Feng Shui practitioners use Numerology. I am a Feng Shui neophyte.

Jane wonders about the methods of calculation for the Life Path. When only the day of birth is used, Jane, you get the birthday number, which has its own meaning and influence but is not the Life Path. There are three different ways to calculate the Life Path (my software offers the option of using any one of them — but the default is set to the method I believe to be correct, of course). There is an article on the subject with detailed info on all three methods. What I do want to say here is that with Numerology, all cycles are connected and the whole system is based on an underlying logic that makes sense once you recognize it as such. First, the Life Path is a cycle, not a state of being or a personality trait. Second, the Life Path cycle is based on the three Period Cycles, which are based on the month of birth, the day of birth and the year of birth respectively and cover the first, middle and last part of your life. Therefore, the correct method is to first calculate the Period Cycles, then add those to find the Life Path.

Linda noticed the importance of the number 8 in her life, which also happens to be her Life Path number. This is not uncommon, but can be a bit tricky. Each one of us tends to be connected or have a preference for a particular number. Keep in mind, however, that seeing this number repeatedly or finding that your phone numbers and house number and so on always contains this number can also be the result of “self-fulfilling prophecies.” Once a number is stuck in your mind you will see it everywhere, on the license plate of the car you crashed into, etc.

Selena has used our Numerology compatibility reports several times to learn more about existing or potential relationships, but has not always been able to use the other person’s full and complete birth name. (In the software program is an option to use incomplete information by asking the program to look only at those aspects of the chart that are based on the data that you do have — for example the date of birth and short name only). When that is the case, the report can still be accurate but never complete. Always try to get the full name and date of birth for the most accurate result.

Jasmin mentions that the foundation of her interest in Numerology has been my book Numerology; Key to your Inner Self. She also mentions that recognition of the “logic” in Numerology has helped her to access her intuition. I have to say that for me the logic in Numerology was probably the most important reason I got hooked. The beautiful simplicity of Numerology, and the way it recognizes how everything is interconnected and part of some incredible dance of synchronicity, is what got to me. By nature I am skeptical in the extreme, but my heart loves to find magic. Numerology is the perfect fit for someone like me. As for the number 23, Jasmin, there is much that can be said (as with any number), but in a nutshell, it is very dynamic and active with energy to spare. It moves all over the place, is tolerant and daring, loves to live on the edges and never takes things too serious. It is humor and friendship and non-judgmental. It binds people on all levels and from all walks of life, and helps them communicate and share. On the flip side, it can be scattered and irresponsible, almost always in need of focus.

  1. Sarah Says:

    Sarah

  2. Vally Says:

    Hi Hans!
The other area of confusion is the number associate to letters. Is it plain and simple as A-1, B-2, C-3,… or is it different. And what about special characters like cedila as in my surname Mendonça.

  3. Andras Says:

Nice try Hans, but the software currently DOES NOT map letters to help mapping a ‘GY’ to say a ‘dj’ that would do some phonetic justice.
It would be a great improvement if the character mapping that your software does would be expanded to map two letter sounds like the
Francophones like the “di” in dieu. I am sure other language based names have quarcks like this and the closest way to aleviate this is to attempt to use phonetic names instead of letter based names. I am still hesitant of doing this however.

  4. Jane Says:

Thanks Hans for clearing up calculation of the Life Path number…I knew I was a 7; but now I have several options as to which 7 I am!…At any rate, one other question along the same lines although it deals with the numerology of addresses…Again I’ve seen books which describe the number of your home as being derived from adding the individual numbers in the address [e.g. 365 is 3+6+5)..but I’ve also seen the number of your home derived by adding the numbers in the address, but then also translating the letters of the street, etc. into numbers and adding those….So, again, which way is it? Or is it both?
