Mercury Direct - Researching the Future
September 29th, 2009 by Jeff JawerThe aspects (significant angles) of the slow-moving planets are the most powerful indicators of individual and collective change in Astrology. On November 15 stern Saturn and potent Pluto form the first of three tense 90-degree squares that will recur on January 31 and August 21, 2010. These are critical marking points in the ongoing series of dramatic patterns that began with the opposition of Saturn and revolutionary Uranus last fall and will continue through the last of Uranus’ seven squares to Pluto in 2015. Although these outer planets mark the shape of things to come, the faster moving inner planets are often the triggers that push them into action.
The transit of Mercury, the speedy messenger, is about to the play the role of planetary instigator. It turns direct on September 29 after traveling in reverse (retrograde) since September 6. Most of us will be happy with this shift since communications may move more easily with Mercury back into its normal flow. However, it will oppose electric Uranus on October 4 and conjunct restrictive Saturn three days later, stirring up the tension (and potential for breakthrough) of their powerful opposition. On October 9 Mercury reenters Libra and will form a square with Pluto on October 10. This fast-moving planet will, in effect, provide us with a preview of major aspects that will be reshaping the world during the next six years.
It’s natural for stress to be a little higher as we bounce from Uranian urges for freedom to Saturnian seriousness and stoicism and to penetrating Pluto’s plunge into the psychic underworld. Stories of surprise, repression and descent are possible, yet Mercury’s transit can also tell tales of liberation, commitment and reconstruction. As is usually the case, we will meet these planetary symbols in both positive and negative ways and as events and psychological states. Yet regardless of how we experience the ride, it is an opportunity to get a glimpse of things to come so that we can be more active in creating the future.
In mythology Mercury was one of only five gods who could enter and leave Pluto’s underworld. This means that we will soon have a chance to enter into scary places and return with vital information. This is a time when we are each messengers of change who will have access to essential ideas with which we can turn the world in a more desirable direction.

Your blogs are fascinating as is your knowledge in your field. What you observe and explain about the planets DOES explain so much of the confusion, frustration, craziness, dislocation that I see and have felt in recent months. I’m glad to know that it wasn’t me going nuts. I will follow what you have to say.
How do I go about learning more about this spiritual-metaphysical “field” that so many write off as wacko?
