The Weird Week That Was
October 12th, 2009 by Jeff JawerWe bombed the Moon, Barack Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize, the stock market rose, and Turkey and Armenia ended 100 years of diplomatic isolation. Apart from the considerable expense of bombing the Moon, a number of astrologers and metaphysically oriented individuals interpreted this as an assault on the feminine principles that the Moon represents.
The symbolism of a pointy-shaped rocket penetrating a round object does suggest a kind of sexual assault, but the nerdy boys at NASA are more about playing with their techie toys and keeping congressional cash flowing their way than attacking the Great Mother. The Moon’s presence in ambivalent Gemini at the time of the event, while making stressful squares with explosive Uranus, structured Saturn and sweet Venus, presents a rather incoherent picture in which the real purpose is difficult to discern. Frankly, while it may be a waste of money and a graceless piece of symbolism, I doubt that the power of the feminine principle has been impacted in any meaningful way.
Barack Obama’s big surprise (mentioned in last week’s blog) was not about a sudden shift of policy but the unexpected award of the Nobel Peace Prize. Even supporters of the President questioned the appropriateness of the prize at this early stage of his administration. However, Nobel committee members were clearly trying to influence U.S. policy and, in fact, may succeed.
Astrologically, the key event was expansive Jupiter turning direct in Aquarius within one degree of Obama’s Ascendant. This lucky planet’s presence on this powerful point in his chart supports the accuracy of his published birth data and increases the expectations of idealists and humanitarians who perceive his as the agent of a significant shift in international relations. Aquarius is a post-tribal, post-national sign that tends to identify with humanity as a whole. Those opposed to Obama will interpret this as a bad thing, proof of something essentially un-American about his presidency. Those of us concerned with the well-being our of species, regardless of ethnicity, hope he can live up to the Aquarian potential of humanizing the planet.
Turkey and Armenia made a diplomatic breakthrough last week yet still have many hurdles ahead before their relationship will be normalized. Still, it is heartening to imagine that their enmity is not eternal. Communicative Mercury’s recent shift into diplomatic Libra is an annual event, but later this month (on October 29) Saturn will makes its first foray into this sign since 1983. This marks a meaningful change of focus that could, among other things, smooth out personal and national relationships. While there are many challenges ahead (like Saturn’s upcoming square with Pluto), every opportunity for a just peace offers hope that we humans are growing up and making things right with one another rather than remaining stuck with our infantile attachment to mutual destruction.

I would like to know more about Saturn entering Libra and smoothing out realationships. Also, is there any help for the job market improving? My boyfriend hasn’t been able to find stable work in months and he has become a very grumpy Leo.
