Saturn Square Pluto: Reshaping the World
November 2nd, 2009 by Jeff JawerSaturn and Pluto, the two heaviest planets in astrology, align in a 90-degree square on November 15. This pattern, which marks a major new stage in collective transformation, repeats on January 31 and August 21 next year. Both Saturn and Pluto are about contraction and a square is arguably the most difficult aspect, so we can expect some tough sledding ahead. As a humanistic astrologer I believe that every pattern has a positive purpose and meaning yet some, like this one, are bound to test us before yielding desirable results. Fear is common to both Saturn and Pluto, increasing the likelihood of events that trigger this unpleasant emotion. We can run into walls of doubt if economic pressures increase. The usual terrors of war and environmental and natural disasters could force themselves into the headlines and, at worst, accelerate a downward spiral of despair. There are, however, positive potentials in the midst of these threatening times.
First, Saturn in Libra’s square to Pluto in Capricorn could produce rising tides of justice and equality that reform institutions and individuals that abuse power. The might that makes right isn’t necessarily physical force or money; it’s mind. Saturn in Libra, a combination viewed favorably in astrological tradition, opens new channels of communication and alliances that can turn the tides of history away from concentrated centers of authority to reintroduce dialogue and revivify democratic principles. A slow but steady buildup of coalitions of unlikely allies can replace fear with effective activism. The necessity (Saturn) of addressing destructive forces (Pluto) will become clearer. However, instead of freezing with fear or panicking, slow-moving Saturn in logical Libra is a reminder to stay cool and think our way through the crises we face.
Saturn is the key or ruling planet of Capricorn, where Pluto currently resides. This gives leverage to the ringed planet and its potential for taking responsible action. Saturn’s presence in Libra is a time when we all need to be more strategic in our thinking. Carefully weighing our options while exploring new forms of cooperation provides the heft needed to respond effectively to threatening environmental, economic and political conditions. Saturn square Pluto forges new tools for addressing complex matters, both personally and collectively. The key is to balance fear with intellect and mistrust with communication. The beauty of this powerful aspect is that we are not required to have answers right now. As long as we are willing to ask tough questions and work diligently with what we find positive change is possible. When we don’t turn away from the unpleasant truths that undermine our security we are rewarded with insights to guide our actions. It is vital, though, that we learn to trust ourselves. This does not require purity or perfection but an honest willingness to do our best. A mature recognition that we are powerful agents of change turns fear into actions that will make us midwives of a better world to come.

I have to agree with you trials may seem, as though they are to be accepted as negativity. However, really, they are a conditioning of the mind, body, and spirit. Very similar to how one turns the rough stone of gold into a very fine work of art. It has to go through the fire to expel the impurities. Which, in turn bring forth the perfections. For these contenders (Saturn & Pluto) to be having a go at it…is a great deal, indeed. Regardless, I do not think it could have happened at a better time, than in the Librarian phase. Since, there is a balance there complimented by equality. Making it very possible for both stubborn planets to bring more to the table than what it would if it were in another astrological phase. Thanks for looking at this glass half full. This is a refreshing outlook on times, such as these that most believe we are facing.
