There’s an interesting dance between the personal and the practical this month. July begins with the Sun in the emotionally sensitive sign of Cancer, where self-protection and coziness are highly desired. The New Moon on July 2 increases the importance of feelings as we are moved by moods and instincts more than by reason. It is appropriate, then, to listen to your heart. Even when what it tells you runs contrary to what the world expects, this is a voice that shouldn’t be silenced. Besides, Cancer is very concerned with safety and can be excellent for business. It awakens senses that can tell you what will nurture your soul as well as your body. There is, though, a greater tendency toward moodiness as this Moon-ruled sign connects us with emotional tides. Nostalgia is common in Cancer, yet looking back is only useful when it inspires us to act in the present. If you are dogged by memories of days gone by, perhaps feeling regret, remember to celebrate the now, where you really live.
Some balance comes in the first third of the month from mental Mercury in its airy home sign of Gemini. The thick emotional waters of Cancer are broken up with bubbles of ideas and conversations that can lighten the atmosphere. But the mind will dive into the feeling realms on July 10 when Mercury enters Cancer. Objectivity is exchanged for words enriched by intimacy that make every discussion extremely personal. Venus, too, the planet of love, is in Cancer until July 12, shading relationships with tenderness and vulnerability. She then heads into Leo where personal will, pride and creativity brighten lives and lighten hearts.
The Full Moon in Capricorn on July 18 signals a turn away from this profoundly personal period. This practical earth sign seeks the higher ground of success and material accomplishment, rather than the cozy nest of familiarity. Its pragmatic plan has a sharp tool to execute it, Mars in Virgo, which has been eagerly willing to serve. The action planet is in detail-oriented Virgo all month, facilitating careful work and modest service. In spite of Cancer’s emotionally charged environment, Mars in logical Virgo has helped us take care of necessary tasks in a dutiful manner.
The hope carried by Venus in Leo grows when the Sun enters this fiery sign on July 22. The inward turn of Cancer the Crab is over and it’s time for the Lion to roar. We’re ready to step outside our shells and take risks to love, play, create and strut across the stage of life. Yes, there can be arrogance in Leo, but that’s a sign of insecurity. When inner needs are not met in Cancer, Leo acts like a spoiled child. Yet when we are made to feel safe in Cancer, what follows is a month of celebration. July always finishes with the Sun back in its home sign where warmth, courage and generosity are promised.
