About Your Report

Every drama has a cast of characters -- a hero, a villain, the best friend, the sidekick and the guy that dies in the first act ... just to name a few. Real life is just the same. We have our everyday roles, from parent to spouse to boss or employee. Role-playing comes naturally to humans, who grow up learning to be many different characters in the course of a lifetime.

But what if you also have a deeper and more enduring role related to your mission on planet earth? What if a cosmic casting director assigned you a part that is all about your life purpose? You would want to know as much as possible about this role of yours -- the highlights and challenges and most of all, your character's motivation and purpose in the story. To play your part well, you at least need to know who you are playing.

The Tarology Card Report describes your life role in terms of one of nine archetypal Tarot characters, from the Magician to the Hermit. Each character has a starring role, or specific purpose, along with talents and character flaws that support and hinder that mission. In this report you will learn a more about who you are on the stage of life so you can better play your role.

Mini Profile: Compared to Magicians, everyone else seems to be moving, thinking and speaking in slow motion. Skilled schmoozer, masterful spin doctors and inventive thinkers, Magicians are here to blaze trails and dispatch messages from God.

Critical, selfish, arrogant, headstrong

Magicians are all about magic. Masters of a Captain Picard-like ability to 'make it so,' you are the ultimate do-er. Indeed, as an ultra-achiever you are the most capable out of all nine archetypes of turning a vision into reality with astounding focus and flow. It's this charmed aspect of your life that seems magical to others.

The word magic conjures the image of a stage magician pulling a rabbit from a hat or Harry Potter waving his wand. In the former, magic implies the illusion of defying the known laws of material reality. In the latter image, it suggests feats that are quite simply miraculous. In truth, you are a master of both the sleight of hand and real magic. You could say the Magician is a con-artist and mage rolled into one persuasive, witty and enchanting package.

At your best you are a conduit for miracles, a channel for inspired action and a pioneer with cutting-edge ideas. At your worst, Darth Vader's no match for your cunning -- and a used car-salesman looks honest next to you. Balancing the dark and the light side of this archetype is a one of your biggest challenges because your potential for accomplishing great good is equal to your potential for doing great harm.

A simple remedy to your dark side might be to replace your penchant for a Machiavelli's 'The end justifies the means' attitude with the cautionary advice of the Hippocratic Oath: 'Above all else, do no harm.' With this new motto pasted on your refrigerator, computer, car dashboard and toilet seat, you are far more likely to resist the temptation to get your own way, no matter what. Remember, winning is no fun at the end of the day if your popular appeal ranks right down there with Saddam Hussein. And anyway, face it, you love the applause, praise and kudos almost as much as the amazing feat you pulled off to merit all that attention. Simply put, you like to be liked.

In myth and fairy tale, the Magician shows up as magically powered sorcerers like as Merlin and Moses. In contemporary culture, the Magician manifests in film archetypes like Harry Potter, Neo of the Matrix and Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker. At the mundane level, the magician is any pioneering and charismatic leader on the world stage.

It's no accident that the Magician is the number one card of the Tarot. But don't confuse that with The One. Yes, you are a potent force in the world, but no, you are not The Matrix's Neo. While you are here to make the world a better place, you are not about to save it. That Messiah complex is a hard one to leave behind when you feel you not only possess the vision lacking in the masses around you, but also the sheer focused willpower to implement it.

What you need to learn is that you are an Initiator. You have the vision and originality to seed new ideas, businesses, inventions, messages and products of all sorts. What you don't have is the persnickety detail and follow-through orientation to take care of implementation. Frankly, all that detail and organizational fine print bores you. Even in the face of that boredom, this is where your Messiah complex can undo what you have so brilliantly initiated. You suffer the mistaken assumption that if something is going to get done right; you have to do it yourself.

The antidote to this assumption is to recognize the value of team playing and delegation. The soloist in you is perfectly suited to the role of visionary CEO, or patent-meister, or expert advisor. But what you must not do is assume that just because it was your idea, you are the best person to take the idea or product all the way to its conclusion. You are not remotely a micromanager. You are rather a global thinker, performer and idea-generator.

Instead of trying to do it all alone, harness the talent of other archetypes, like the down-to-earth and organized Emperor, or the expressive and creative Empress. Your charm and zeal are more than enough to rally support and encourage teammates to go the extra mile for you. Realize that you alone cannot achieve your vision and that if you go it alone you will miss the mark. Your best resource, once you have had the inspiration, is a team effort to take that inspiration from vision to reality. Motto to live by: All for One and One for All.

The life mission of every Magician in some way involves the creative principle. You are here to be a creator, to go forth into the world and create something new. New ideas, new philosophies, new approaches, new starts and new products. You are the master of achievement and all your creations are endowed with a touch of the pioneering and inventive. Whether you are a scientist or an artist, businessman or householder, you add a dash of originality to all you do. Your raw creative energy takes on even greater magnitude when you allow it to be connected to divine inspiration. That's the wand you hold to the heavens, a lightning rod for unique ideas and inventions. When you allow yourself to be a channel for the greater good, miracles happen and magic follows you everywhere.

Your prime number: 1

The Magician's position as the first card in the Tarot's Major Arcana means that your archetype resonates with the number one. One is all about beginnings and newness, about initiation and change. This number imparts the ability to start over and to change course with minor trepidation and great success.

You excel at new jobs, new relationships, new careers and even moving to new places. The marketing cliché 'new-and-improved' was invented for Magicians. You bring a beginner's mind to untried situations, places and people that allows success simply because failure does not even occur to you. Master of the first impression, you let others see the dazzling you at first glance. The real you, however, is reserved for intimates and even then, it takes time before you stop making an impression and simply relax into being yourself. In your book, appearances do matter.

A downside of all this upstart energy is that you relish endings about as much as a cold shower. You are the last one to admit something is over, whether it's a tired career, a worn out love relationship, or a dead-end job. It's not that you favor perseverance and suffering, it's just that endings are no fun in your book while beginnings are full of what-ifs. Beginnings embody potential, while endings represent the wilted blossom. Yet, you of all types know that endings are unavoidable so that the beginnings you love can happen as well. That won't change your distaste for closure and termination, but it does help you rationalize them with sayings like 'When one door closes, another opens,' or 'Everything happens for a reason.'

Backing up your self-starter Magician nature is the 10th card of the Major Arcana, The Wheel of Fortune, and the 19th card, The Sun. Both add unique talents to your basic Magician storyline that can be harnessed by you, especially if you consciously choose to engage these supporting energies.

Where She Lands, Nobody Knows: 10

The 10th archetype of the Major Arcana, the Wheel of Fortune, suggests that lady luck or fate plays a key role in your Magician path. And to an extent, this luck factor shows up in your life as synchronicity or an uncanny ability to be in the right place at the right time. Honed with awareness, this ability turns into the capacity for unimpeded flow, in which all things really do work together with improbable harmony.

But the Wheel of Fortune is about far more than just good timing or bad timing. It is about the truth that at center of the wheel, its hub, is the self that directs the wheel's rotation. This core self, or soul self, is in charge of our experience even though we make the mistake of imagining that life events just seem to befall us. The truth is we attract people, events and lessons into our experience of life at the rim of the wheel. As a Magician, you have the capacity to get to know this core self and harness the creative and life changing power of your true identity. And in doing this, you demonstrate to the world the power of true self-direction.

Here Comes the Sun: 19

The archetype of the Sun endows you with a huge capacity for happiness, success and all the optimism of a sunny day. When you consider that solar deities like Ra and Sehkmet rank as all time powerful and worshipped ones, you get the gist of how the Sun works in your life. It gives you more than a bit of radiance that makes people want to bask in your presence. It also means that you run the risk of being the center of attention to the point that you feel plagued by the constant adoration and drained by the attention of others.

For a while, being worshipped or just liked a whole lot by many, feels good. You like to be liked, remember? And you enjoy the sense that your glowing nature inspires others, tying nicely into your Messiah complex. But in the end your, challenge becomes how to maintain your hostess-with-the-mostess reputation, and not feel resentful for being all too human. How can you shine, but also give yourself permission to be grouchy, to have a bad hair day, and basically be less than perfect?

The real Sun has mastered that trick nicely -- it goes down at night. It spends half its time casting light, and lets the moon take over at night. To let the Moon take some of the limelight means in practical terms to take time off from center stage and performance-mode. Downtime for you in demand Magicians requires turning off the phone, ignoring emails, locking your door, and making use of the Do Not Disturb sign.

Sounds easy on paper, but your drive and do-it-all-now philosophy makes rest and rejuvenation feel like a chore. The Sun urges you to recall that an untended fire eventually burns out. You of all archetypes must tend to your internal fire, stoking it not only when you are hot on a new idea, or project, but also carefully feeding that fire with restorative measures like time alone and time for play. Vacation getaways are your favorite way of escaping the pressure cooker, but you also need to learn to find niches of quietude and replenishment in your everyday life. And while sleep seems like missed opportunity for action, a good night rest is your best ally in maintaining your sparkling, splendorous reputation.

When you are not working, you need to find avenues for play. If you are lucky, work feels like play and vitalizes your days. If work feels like work, then time out with friends, with your tennis or squash buddy, or just taking in a movie can be simple playtime cure-alls. Play and rest are the two essential counterpoints to your drive and ambition. When you master these, you master the art of shining brilliantly in the world while remaining vital and happy in yourself.

Your Magician path is mirrored by the three Hebrew letters: Aleph, Yud and Kuf. Within each of these sacred letters exists a gift and a lesson for your life path.

Aleph

The gift of this first letter of the Hebrew alphabet. Aleph, is leadership. Aleph translates literally as 'general' or titular head, while Aleph spelled backwards renders Peleh, which means wondrous. This wondrous combination endows you with astute leadership ability. Yet Aleph allows that the kind of leadership that works best is one in which you inspire rather than command. Wonder and awe are two ways you can rally the proverbial troops, doing your Amazing You routine. Magician evangelists Billy Graham is a prime example of the persuasive side of your powers. Graham's crusades to convert his audience to born-again Christianity succeeded on the sheer momentum of one preacher's ability to rally enthusiasm and awe in listeners. The man could have sold Apple Computers to Bill Gates, so powerful was his wonder quotient.

The Lesson of Aleph is the power of silence. As the only letter of 22 that is soundless, Aleph can be seen as a representation of unrealized potential, of the world before God uttered the pronouncement: Let there be light. What Aleph teaches is perhaps the hardest of lessons for the chattering mind of the Magician -- stillness. You are already an expert at thinking (if not over-thinking) before you act. This letter teaches you instead how to not think before you leap into action. Learning this lesson endows you with the potential for inspired action and divine results.

Yud

The gift of this letter is expansion. This tiniest of the 22 Hebrew letters contains the explosive power of 10, an ability to magnify and multiply to infinity whatever it touches. In fact, there is a built-in never ending element to this letter, which is used to connote something that continues on into the future. The way a scribe draws the letters of the alphabet according to Jewish law is to begin each letter with a Yud, and then expand the ink with a quill pen into the form of the desired letter. Inside of every letter then there is the seed of the Yud. What all this means for you Magicians is that you have a knack for nurturing a small idea, a spark of a relationship, a seed of a concept, or any tiny bud to full and sustainable blossom. Like the big bang, from the most infinitesimal of beginnings you can create some to the grandest outcomes.

The lesson of Yud for Magicians is centeredness. Yud is the only letter to float in mid-air, giving it the distinction of being unearthly and a little bit spacey. Hovering as it does between Heaven and Earth (just like the a Magician's upraised wand), Yud is a conduit. Indeed, from the dot that forms the belly of Yud, emerges two prongs -- one pointing upward to heaven and the other down to earth. In the liminal world between cosmic and mundane reality, Yud acts as both a receiver and transmitter. But for this conduit to work, the Yud -- and thus the Magician -- must stay balanced in mid-air. To be too down-to-earth or too flighty, is to be uncentered. Centeredness then is a precarious place that is neither immanent nor transcendent, but a little bit of both. From this centeredness, you are a conduit for the transference of cosmic power, bringing to the world a bit of heaven on earth.

Kuf

The gift of Kuf is receptivity. One of only two Hebrew letters formed from two unconnected parts, Kuf illustrates in its 'brokenness' the value of empty space. Empty space is like a beginner's mind -- free of preconceptions and predetermined ideas. Just as an empty cup waits to be filled, you Magicians have the capacity to withhold judgment and just see what happens. In your highest expression then, Kuf gifts you with the ability to be neutral and open-hearted. From this receptive stance, you are able to see what others miss and to capitalize on this vision with inventive and original ideas. Inspiration rushes in when you are empty enough to receive it.

The lesson of Kuf is wholeness. Often associated with Holiness, Kuf asks us to consider what it means to be a holy human, a being that is part animal and part God. This lesson is apparent in Kufs translation to the word monkey, a creature that shares 99 percent of its DNA with humans and seems to bridge the world of the animal kingdom and the human realms. If monkey is an almost-human, a human then is an almost-God. The very construction of Kuf illustrates this challenge -- with its left leg that descends from above to below the line, in other words, deep into the earth. The lesson for Magicians then constitutes the tricky business of being in the earth but not of it. Spiritualizing matter means celebrating the holiness and wholeness of the human animal without falling into the illusion that we are just-animal. To bring the light of spirit deeply into the flesh, Magicians must find the balance between hedonism and asceticism, between revelry and renunciation. Spiritual practices that celebrate the body and the spirit -- such as Tantra, yoga and ecstatic dance, are ways that can help you find this balance.

Just how is it that you accomplish so much, in so little time, with such aplomb? Some people imagine that you have a magic touch, that fortune is on your side for whatever task or goal you engage in. What you really have is one simple and effective gift: focus.

You never will understand the scatterbrains of the world, nor the procrastinators, nor the laissez-faire types who just let things happen. They are like wide beam lights to your laser-like concentration of will power.

This knack for concentrating your will is like the power of a magic wand. A wand is like a fiber-optic cable, capable of condensing a vast amount of energy in a narrow space. You don't carry a wand, you are the wand. You condense an idea to its essential ingredients. You also channel the energy necessary to take the idea into the world.

In the classic Rider-Waite Tarot image, the Magician stands with his wand held high above his head. Think of the wand in this case as a lightning rod -- what you are attracting is nothing short of divine inspiration, sudden insight and brilliant innovation. When that strikes, it descends through the wand and into you, the Magician. And while the wand is a receiver, it also is a transmitter. By pointing the wand, you can send your ideas, messages and projects out into the world. Inspiration comes into you, and focused will power comes out.

Yes, some would call you single-minded, determined and purposeful. Others would label you obsessive, intense and self-absorbed. All are true of you at various places and times in your life. But the qualities at both ends of the spectrum are simply aspects of your ability to focus. What you offer the world is directed action -- action that is specific, intentional and on target. You don't waste effort on peripheral tasks or people. As a consequence, you might not have whole lot of hobbies or friends. The upside, of course, is you are a magnificent achiever, accomplishing what others only dream of.

It's all about you. That's the bad news, though with your firmly entrenched self-absorption, the idea that you are the center of everyone's universe seems only right and natural. Unfortunately for anyone in relationship with you, your complete self-involvement invariably makes them feel as significant as yesterday's losing lottery numbers.

You mean well, you want to have meaningful relationships and you want to feel emotionally connected to your lover, friends and colleagues. But for this to happen, you need to consider how you can move away from the mirror in which all you see in others is yourself. Yes, Narcissus was surely a Magician soul.

There is an ultimate of irony to your center-stage self. While you really want to share the limelight (in fact you deeply desire to experience friendship and intimacy with others that is honest and vulnerable) you invariably sabotage the very thing you desire. How does this happen?

For one, you have the darndest time actually feeling your feelings. You can think about your feelings, but actually feeling them is a Herculean challenge. When someone asks you how you feel, listen to your response. Most often you will reply with 'I think.' The very asset that makes you so brilliant, that mind of yours, gets in the way of your potent and powerful emotions rising to the surface.

When you are not avoiding your feelings, you are usually accusing those around you of avoiding intimacy and their own emotional terrain. A master of deflection, you have probably acquired the profound illusion that your intimates and friends are as emotionally expressive as Dr. Spock from Star Trek. The truth is, in light of your Vulcan-like repression of feelings, those around you have simply learned to adapt. What's perhaps most amazing is, with the power of persuasion, you usually have not only your significant other convinced he or she is the intimacy dunce, but the marriage or couples counselor as well.

You can charm and manipulate with a politician's ease. But in the end, unless you choose to experience and express your feelings, you will end up the loneliest of archetypes. Being surrounded by admirers, fans and cheerleaders in the end is no substitute for the embrace of those who truly want to see you happy -- in other words, people who love you.

Casanova was surely a Magician, displaying the charm and allure that makes most Magicians a magnet for the opposite sex. There is something ultimately sexy about you alchemical types and there's not much you can do to disguise it. It's not about the right shade of lipstick or the Hugo Boss scarf, though you undoubtedly have mastered the art of accessorizing. Your sex appeal goes deeper than apparel or appearance -- it comes instead from a sensual and seductive aura. You don't flaunt it, you simply have it. While that enormous magnetism means you are rarely without a date, it also means you sometimes feel objectified and even sexually harassed. In the end, you realize that attention is no substitute for intimacy.

Men are described by women as artistic or brooding -- think young Marlon Brando. You possess the kind of rebel-poet energy that made the booze-addicted Dylan Thomas famous. At the same time, you stop far short of self-destruction -- the Narcissus in you wouldn't really want to damage the merchandise. Instead you pull off the illusion of someone with a mild death wish, someone erotically charged and someone deeply soulful.

If you are a woman, men would describe you as Amelia-Earhart-bold or aggressively-flamboyant. You have an angular tomboy edge that advertises a can-do-independence many men like. You probably ran with the boys when you were a kid -- and as an all grown up magical girl, the boys now run after you. To picture it, think Jamie Lee Curtis or Carrie Fisher. The attraction men have toward you is understandable -- you can play with them, on their terms, and still be fun in bed.

Whether you are a male or female magus, it takes a special man or woman to get you off the proverbial playing field, and into the bleachers of committed and exclusive relationship. But once you commit you are as steady as Yellowstone's Old Faithful. Relationship becomes the safe harbor from which you routinely venture in risky business and money deals. Your steadfast loyalty comes not so much from moral piety, but the simple desire to keep calm waters calm. And while you are normally unwaveringly loyal, there are two mitigating circumstances that deter you from your monogamous promise-- betrayal and altered states of inhibition. As soon as the other person breaks the fidelity vow, all bets are off. And often as soon as you are off-the-wall inebriated or otherwise high, you are all too prone to your own turbo-charged libido getting the better of your vows.

Most compatible archetypes: Magician, High Priestess, Hierophant, Chariot, Hermit

Least compatible archetypes: Empress, Emperor, Lovers, Strength

There is nothing you can't do when you put your focus to it, but that doesn't mean that every career or job is best suited to your magical ways. For enduring work bliss, the one ingredient you can't do without is independence. Like yeast in bread, independence is essential to your rising success. You desire to be left alone to do your job and do it your way, without micromanagers or higher-ups controlling the scene. And left to your devices, you invariably pull of masterful accomplishments in whatever field of work you tackle. You want to be accountable for your ultimate performance or product delivery, not for your every move on the way to those outcomes.

This means that freelance work, entrepreneurship, and technical expertise are havens for Magicians. You do your solo thing, take your bows, and go on to achieve more. What you cannot easily endure are jobs that have you following rote orders, doing routine and repetitive tasks, and work that requires you to suppress your visionary nature to focus on pesky minutiae. As an expert advisor then, you would happily write a sweeping policy statement but fail miserably if your task was to also implement it.

Magicians who venture to be a cog in the machine instead of the engine, eventually escape that worker-bee perdition by simply up and quitting. You might not quit until you have stewed in discontent for a long while, but sooner or later, you may find yourself walking out in a huff and often surprising bosses and colleagues who had no clue how truly miserable you were. Your mate or best friend will have heard an endless litany of complaints, but the workplace crew will usually be oblivious thanks to your adept cover up act.

The challenge in work is simple: find a job or career that lets you do your thing at your own pace, and with your own inspired ideas. Avoid work that makes you feel like a drone or peon, in which you are replaceable and dispensable. Chopping wood and carrying water might be a great Zen idea for enlightenment, but for you Magician's that prescription is about as useful as a sleeping pill. For you, work is often your life, and work needs to be a buzzing, fast-paced, caffeinated place.

Possible perfect careers: broadcast journalist, reporter, writer, author, researcher, scientist, business owner, CEO, performing artist, actor, stock broker, financial analyst, inventor, mass-marketer.

Your best friend planet is none other that Hermes/Mercury, messenger of the Gods, the guy who communicated between the denizens of Heaven and the folks of earth. This go-between God can be understood as the lightening-quick power that every so often descends into your mortal mind in the form of inspiration and insight. Where DO those magical ideas of yours really come from? From your astrological right-hand man, Hermes, of course.

Your power goes beyond merely having great ideas, but includes the essential next step, Making It So. This ability of Magicians to make inspiration become tangible comes via Mercury's proximity to the Sun, the very heart of the solar system. Without the sun, life on earth would not exist. The Sun is the life-force energy that Mercury, by virtue of close orbit, can readily access. You as a Magician, therefore, have that same ability to channel or direct life-force energy though you (or your magic wand) and into the world of physical reality. You are not the originator of that life-force energy, but you are the vehicle for its transmission.

According to astrologer Carolyn Casey, Mercury is the planet that asks us: What are you a voice for? Your life mission then contains the capacity to be a messenger of some sort. What your message to the world is and how you do it as a pioneering achiever depends on where Hermes is lounging in your natal chart.

Tapping the Power Planet: Your Message

The sign of Mercury in your natal astrology chart indicates just how you can best activate that mission of 'what are you a voice for?' Mercury is the messenger to the gods and your message to the world is revealed through this witty and talkative planet.

Mercury in Sagittarius: A Magician whose message to the world is a cross-cultural smorgasbord of philosophical ideas and educational offerings. Nothing annoys you Sage-Mages more than adherence to dogma and narrow-minded folks who believe there is only one road up the same mountain. Broad-minded and tolerant, you accept and promulgate the wisdom of all traditions and lands. When they are not discussing woolgathering lofty ideas or daydreaming about world peace, these globetrotters show us all how small the world really is by connecting the dots of common ground among all peoples.

You are here to be original and daring, but an insecure Magician still learning the ropes can show up in the world as domineering, intolerant, egotistical and overly aggressive. Temper your drive to succeed with a dose of compassion, and you will rally the support of others in accomplishing your formidable and pioneering goals. While you might indeed be the loudest instrument in the symphony, your challenge is to realize that alone the music you make is not nearly as delightful as the music you make in concert with other instruments. Only when you learn the art of becoming a team player, you will rise to your highest potential as team leader.

You are courageous, inventive, independent and confident without being overbearing or pretentious. You inspire and motivate others with your powerful persuasion and original approach. Although you can be unconventional, your 'can do' aura attracts support from all quarters. You want people to succeed and people around you want you to succeed. This win-win formula makes for a magical synergy in which great goals are achieved in the spirit of cooperation and collaboration. When you are masterfully magical, you can move mountains and part seas, or at least encourage others to perform miracles for you.
