Creative Consciousness

Jeff Jawer

Maybe it's the closeness of the Uranus-Pluto square, the interminable U.S. Presidential campaign, last weekend's weird Aries Full Moon or my pending trip to Bali and Beijing that has me rattled. It could be reading one too many articles about melting ice caps or nuclear threats. The evidence for growing change messes with my comfort-seeking Taurus mind and I don't think I'm the only one who is shaken by these times.

Change, though, is the essence of life, and like most of you I'd be bored without it. Yet the drumbeats of fear and doubt seem louder than usual now, tempting even open-minded folks to seek out safe, familiar ground. We're searching for balance in these last few days of Saturn in gracious Libra. Yet on October 5, the ringed planet of reality enters the shadows of transformational Scorpio where facing emotional issues grows even more important.

I'm sure I will have plenty of opportunities to write about transformation in the next three years. It's the nature of things to break down, which is even more natural during the soul shaking squares of Uranus and Pluto. We might as well get used to the extreme shifts that lie ahead. However, it's not helpful or truthful to ignore all the positive potentials of this major cycle.

A barrier to recognizing the potential benefits of Uranus square Pluto is that these are mind-blowing transits. This pair of outer planets lives beyond the conventional limits of reality represented by Saturn's orbit. The psychedelic experiences that accompanied the Uranus-Pluto conjunctions of 1965-66 were on almost no one's radar. The sexual revolution was another shock to the mainstream. Transits of Uranus and Pluto open up new spaces by rubbing out lines on old maps of consciousness.

Human ingenuity is not exhausted. The technological miracles that have radically altered the world since Uranus' discovery in the late 18th century demonstrate the almost inexhaustible creative power of the human mind. Yes, we don't appear to have the higher wisdom of Jupiter to use these innovations without damaging the environment, but even as icecaps melt at a frighteningly rapid pace, the capacity for inventing solutions is present in all of us.

We have all had breakthroughs in our lives, moments of sudden awakening and discovery. That's what we have to look forward to during the next three years of Uranus square Pluto. Cultivating flexible thinking and open-mindedness will spawn ideas to better our individual lives and contribute to a new collective consciousness. There are always challenges in times of change, and I'm not minimizing the pain and suffering people experience as environments and institutions are altered. Yet I'm also excited about what we will create and discover at this transformational turning point on our incredible journey.
