December begins with plenty of flash and excitement and ends on a more serious note. The month starts with the Sun in optimistic Sagittarius, bringing hope for a brighter future. This sign’s lucky ruling planet Jupiter is joined by delightful Venus on December 1 to add a dose of indulgence that spurs an urge to splurge. The Sun joins assertive Mars on the December 6 bringing a spicy sense of adventure and a sense of initiative. However, impatience, anger and aggression are potential pitfalls of this fiery union. A chilling trend comes when vivacious Venus enters cool Aquarius on December 7. The love planet’s move into this cerebral and freedom-loving sign takes some of the sentimentality out of the season as we seek pleasure in new and different forms rather than sticking to tradition. If you are in a relationship, this is not time to be clingy so allow more breathing space for your partner until the new year. Rockets may start going off on December 10 when the Sun crosses paths with explosive Uranus. This volatile combination can spike up nervous energy, trigger rebellious impulses and bring shocking news. During the days that follow Mars makes the same stressful 90-degree square with Uranus, continuing a volatile trend of unexpected news and emotional instability. The pressure doesn’t let up on December 12 when mental Mercury enters serious Capricorn and runs right into deep dark Pluto. Minds narrow and focus on weak spots and problems in ways that may help solve some of them in spite of a tendency to excessive criticism and finding flaws. The Full Moon in jittery Gemini on December 12 is square Uranus and Saturn, ratcheting up intensity and increasing the likelihood for chaotic feelings and circumstances. Staying flexible and being open to change helps let off steam in constructive ways.
Concentration is strong and productivity can be high on December 15 with a Mars-Saturn square that leaves little room for error. If you are disciplined and stick to a well-defined plan, this can be a very constructive time. However, carelessness will probably be punished. The Sun enters responsible Capricorn on December 21, marking the Winter Solstice (Summer in Soweto). Yet the holiday spirit may be dampened with the Sun’s conjunction to Pluto on December 22. Digging deep and touching on core issues, though, can be healthy if the will to change is greater than the desire to blame. Macho Mars follows the same trajectory by moving into Capricorn on December 27 and joining Pluto on December 28. It’s clear that transformation is on the agenda for 2009. The Capricorn New Moon on December 27 points to the kind of commitment that’s needed for success. Yet a sweet Venus-Neptune conjunction reminds us that inspiration and idealism are needed to motivate our best efforts. The year ends with a smart conjunction of chatty Mercury and philosophical Jupiter on December 31. Regardless of the challenges that lie ahead, we have the wisdom and intelligence to make choices that are realistic and potentially lead to success.
